What the Sunnis want is very clear: more power. But that power has to be envisioned and acquired thru the ballot box. The democratic process started because of two reasons: one reason is the resistance of Iraqis who are predominantly Sunni Arabs; and the second reason is the insistence of Ali Sistani who is the grand Hayat-Allah of Shiites who said that a directly elected body of government by Iraqi population has to take place instead of a puppet government assigned by the U.S. so, both the Shiites and Sunnis contributed for what is going on in Iraq. The armed resistance against the occupation and the election which made it possible; are a combination of one two punch that the Iraqi’s able to use as the fruit of their sacrifice note a given as invaders would like the world to believe.
Aside the resistance forces who are diverse in nature (mostly Jihadis and nationalists) there are other groups waiting the result of the December 15, 2005 election without resorting to resistance. The Dawa, and the SCIRI from religious Shiite parties as well as Iyad Allawi and Ahmad Chalabi representing the secular wing of the Shiites are all hopeful for what is going to be gain in that election. Surely the biggest winners are the religious parties including ones that are mentioned above also losers are scratching their heads are the secularists like Ahmad Chalabi. One notable mention is Mouqtada al Sadir. He is not running directly for office nor did he indorse the election and the process; but, being pragmatic he abstain from obstructing the parliamentary election in which his supporters poised to win seats as well as a cabinet position for Iraqi Shiites to whom he fought the occupation forces twice in 2004 in which his forces reduced by hundreds if not thousands in the fight thereby reducing his ability to further his agenda by force in order to establish anti occupation and anti Baath party so that nationalistic and religious country could be realized.
The war started by aggressive administration of George W. Bush is now in no way benefiting the U.S. in a way the president realized. His invasion of Iraq in 2003 was one of the great blunders of modern day warfare to establish a colony through a puppet government that would open oil fields to a multi billionaire oil companies; that endorses Zionist state of Israel in order to darken the hope of Palestine homeland; and establish military bases as alternative to check on Arab democratic forces and clerical government of Iran. that dream shattered in pieces the moment Sunni’s resist the occupation in IED and in almost ineffective RPG and small weapons.
Now America has only one ally that can be trusted: Kurdistan’s of Iraq. It would be interesting to see if Kurds are foolish enough to relay on American government to curve out a homeland for themselves by force if America kicked out by Iraq and Kurds denied the Kirkuk territory as their own for the greater Kurdistan against the will of the rest of the population that constituted an estimated half of the population in the territory. America might not be choosing to support Kurdistan for verity of reason including the disapproval of independent Kurdistan by the neighboring states one of whom is Turkey a key ally to America. This is of course a complicated matter and it is fluid. But history teaches us Kurdistan is betrayed by the U.S. time and again when their interest is not protected well.
The experts in Iraq have different takes about the situation: some are reflecting what they desire rather than the reality and others are speculating about it reading the news from different sources. I am not at all confident on what they say. For instant Juan Cole has detail accounts some of the parties on Shiites side and brands the Sunni Resistance Forces as terrorists. He clearly becomes delusional who terrorized who; who’s responsible for Iraqi security. Terrorism is a method in which forces deliberately attack the civilian population. But according to him it is only the Sunnis are responsible for it. Even though he believes the invasion of Iraqi cities made things worst for American’s, he totally ignore the fact the American forces clearly committed a crime in which some estimate between four and six thousand people died mostly civilians in city of Fallujah. Isn’t that terrorism? Why would Fallujah destroyed while many people still live in the city disobeying an order from the invading forces to evacuate? Why were young people aren’t allowed to leave the city? The medics prevented from entering the city? Unlike Juan Cole I believe terrorism is used by all forces: American and those who opposed them as well. And let me remind people like him and others as well no one know who committed the terrorism against the Shiite population where as we know terrorism started with Bush’s rape of independent Iraq despite the fact the whole world save Israel supporting him. Not even the so called coalitions of the willing are supported by their people. I would like to remind him and people who are worst than him that America is now thanks to Bush becomes a rogue nation and a danger to the world peace. This opinion is reflected not only in Islamic world but also in Europe as well as Asia, Latin America and Africa. By supporting the occupation in order to “stabilize Iraq” all bloggers (American media already endorsed the war before it begun) are endorsing the suffering of Iraqis there by assuring anti-American sentiment around the world. Only people like me who are anti occupation are truly save America from the folly of this debacle.
