Media Matters for America & Colorado Media Matters Compile Shock Jocks’ Vitriolic Smears | We Can Stop The Hate
Media Matters for America in partnership with Colorado Media Matters recently released a compilation of several shock jocks' vitriolic smears. Among the targeted communities, immigrants figure prominently.
The report Radioactive Smears contends that local conservative radio creates an "echo chamber of falsehoods". Specifically, the report states that there are three major themes that these shock jocks smear immigrants with: 1) the blame game with the foreclosure crisis; 2) nasty generalizations and hateful statements; and 3) accusing immigrants of being violent criminals. The shock jocks' attacks are directed not only at immigrants but also at Latinos, regardless of their immigration status.
Here are a few of the shock jocks' nasty quotes, which have been highlighted by Media Matters:
G. Gordon Liddy: "[T]he problem that I have is with people who come over here and instead of wanting to become Americans, you know, fly the American flag, learn English, and so forth, they want to fly the Mexican flag, they want to speak Spanish, you know, and other varieties of illegal alien." Liddy also claimed: "They want to reconquer America, they say."
Michael Savage: "We need to get our troops out of Iraq and put them on the streets of America to protect us from the scourge of illegal immigrants who are running rampant across America, killing our police for sport, raping, murdering like a scythe across America while the liberal psychos are telling us they come here to work." Savage continued: "[Y]ou turn on the cable news, they're covering again a missing child. Not a missing country but a missing child...We hear about the rape of a woman, but not about the rape of the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is crying, she's been raped and disheveled-raped and disheveled by illegal aliens."
Michael Savage has also said: "We're getting refugees now who have never used a telephone, a toothbrush, or toilet paper. You're telling me they're going to assimilate? They will never assimilate. They come here and they bring their destitute ways to this country, and they never assimilate." He continued: "And then their children become gang-bangers. It is a disaster." Savage contrasted our present wave of immigration with those of the past as follows: "[They] had used toilet paper and toothbrushes and they knew how to survive in this country. They took a job or they worked. They didn't come and sit and have 16 children and eat beetle nuts."
The words of these shock jocks can leave no doubt. These radio personalities make a living off of hatemongering and smearing immigrants and Latinos. And yet there are several radio stations which choose to carry programming filled with their lies and corrosive vitriol. By choosing to carry these hateful voices, they too are accountable for the lies and hate. It is time for these radio stations to explain their actions.
